Manhattan Dealers - Introduction

Manhattan Dealers is a single player, beat ‘em up game for the Amiga, Atari ST & MS DOS. Originally released in France, it was developed by Silmarils and published by Infogrames in 1988. Later that same year it was published in the United States under the name Operation Clean Streets by American publisher Brøderbund Software for the same systems.

Manhattan Dealers - Gameplay

You play as inspector Harry, who has been sent to Manhattan, in order to break up an international drugs gang known as the Manhattan dealers. 

Your goal is to seize and destroy the gang's supply of narcotics, each enemy you defeat will drop the drugs they are carrying which can be burnt in a skip in exchange for extra health. 

There are a total of nine different sections of the game world each representing a different  part of Manhattan with its own enemy type. There are several different enemies to defeat from spiky haired punks riding bikes to whip wielding vampires on the side of the Hudson River. While fighting these enemies, the locals will occasionally appear at their windows to see what is happening and some will even throw objects such as bricks and flowerpots at you.

Once all enemies have been defeated and the drugs have been successfully destroyed, you have beaten level one. There are a total of five levels of the game, each level is identical to the next, the only difference being the amount of enemies to defeat and drugs required in order to complete it.

Gangster Town - Introduction

Gangster Town is a shooter created by SEGA in 1987 for the SEGA master system. The game required the use of the master system’s Light Phaser accessory, which was a “light gun” controller. A “light gun” controller is a pointing device usually shaped to resemble a pistol used for targeting objects on a screen. Two Light Phasers can be used for local multiplayer.

The game takes place in the 1920’s in an unnamed American city that has been overrun by gangsters. You play as a lone FBI agent, who has been tasked with restoring order to the city by taking down the gangsters and their leader, the infamous Big Boss.

The game is split up into a number of different stages, the first of which is a practice stage, in the style of a police shooting range. Other scenes include a car chase, a downtown street and a nightclub where gangsters will attack from all possible angles including from windows, behind curtains and even from underneath manhole covers. 

At the end of each stage Big Boss’s loyal second in command, Ferret Face will attack you and must be defeated in order to proceed.

After completing a stage, your shooting record is displayed.This is made up of three sections: shots fired, hit ratio & points earned. You are awarded points by performing actions such as shooting gangsters, scenery or even shooting the spirits of defeated gangsters. An innocent bystander named Lulu will also occasionally appear on screen, who will attempt to run to safety, extra points will be rewarded if you help her.

The detective is a single player adventure game, released exclusively for the commodore 64 in 1986. It was solely developed by Sam Manthorpe & Paul Jay and published by Argus Press Software (APS) for the European & North American markets.

The Detective - Gameplay

The game takes place in 1974 at the MacFungus Mansion located just outside london. You play as inspector Snide from Scotland Yard, who has been tasked with investigating the death of the mansion's owner, Angus MacFungus.

Your goal is to solve the murder and identify the killer before time runs out. You gain clues by gathering physical evidence from the various rooms within the mansion and interrogating potential suspects.They can be asked questions about objects you have found, other characters and even Mr McFungus himself. There are ten envelopes each of which require a piece of evidence before you can accuse a suspect.

The game features a range of suspects each with their own unique back story and some with potential motives. Such as Reverend Wrinklebum, the local vicar whose wife disappeared in mysterious circumstances or Bentley the butler who is the lifelong servant to the McFungus family and exhibits slight hostile behavior.

Occasionally the killer will strike again by murdering another suspect. This can happen in a variety of ways from simply strangling their victim to pushing a large piano from a great high onto their unsuspecting victim below.

Chicago 90 is a police themed racing game developed and published by French games studio, Microids. It was released in 1989 for the Amiga, Atari ST & MS DOS.

Chicago 90 - Gameplay

Chicago 90 is set in 1990’s Chicago as the name implies and is the only game on this list which allows you to play as either the police or the criminal. 

The end goal for each side is different.If you choose to play as a criminal, your goal is to escape the city without being caught by the police. The police's goal is to prevent the criminal from escaping the city. You do this by using a total of six police vehicles, one you control directly and the others by issuing commands.

Regardless of the side you choose, the UI is exactly the same and is themed to resemble that of a police command center.

When playing as the police you can issue several commands to your police vehicles. Such as Intercept and stop the criminals car or head to a set location and create a roadblock. While attempting to locate the criminal's vehicle you will come across a number of other obstacles such as shootings and car accidents.

Law Of The West is a wild west themed graphical adventure game developed and published by Accolade Inc in 1985 for the Commodore 64 & Apple II series of computers in North America.

Law Of The West - Gameplay

The game takes place in a small frontier town known as Gold Gulch and consists of four locations, the saloon, stagecoach office, train station and bank. With the player taking the role of the town's sheriff.

The aim of the game is to maintain order in the town until sun down at which point you will be scored on your performance. Along the way you will encounter a range of characters from Mexican fugitives to the town's doctor.

One at a time the town's residents will approach the sheriff with an inquiry. The player is presented with five lines of dialogue, the top line in red is the character's comment and the other four lines are potential responses, each of which has its distinct tone from apologetic to aggressive. 

The player also has the option to draw and fire their gun at any time during the conversation with the use of the joystick. Beware however as doing so at the wrong time could result in the conversation being terminated or the character returning fire.

The interaction will end either after the player draws their gun or the character has said all they wanted to say, at which point they will perform an action. Depending on how the conversation ended the character has a range of possible actions. This could be as simple as walking away or immediately drawing their gun in an attempt to kill you. Some characters will even pretend to be leaving by walking off screen just to return immediately from behind an object to ambush you.

If you are unlucky enough to get shot, you will black out and the town's doctor will be called. Depending on your previous interactions with the doctor as well as the other residents within the town. The doctor will choose whether or not to save your life. Occasionally the doctor will be out of town resulting in the player’s immediate death.

The game will end after you have either been killed or have interacted with all the available characters. The game tracks a number of things from how well you maintained your authority to how many crimes you committed during your play through. This information will be displayed on screen in the form of several symbols.

Raid 2020, takes place in a futuristic sci-fi setting where America has been overrun by a nationwide drug gang. The gang's leader is known simply as Pit Bull, a ruthless murderer and martial arts expert from Columbia.

The player takes the role of agent Shadow, a member of the last uncorrupted law enforcement agency in America. Shadow lost his right arm during an undercover drug bust that went wrong. luckily for him, a talented neurosurgeon was able to attach a robotic prosthetic with an integrated computer that allows him to communicate with the agency's headquarters.

Your goal is to eliminate Pit bull and his various minions by any means necessary. 

The gameplay consists of two types of missions. The first type are on foot missions where you are tasked with eliminating all the enemies in a set area, using the money dropped by deceased enemies to purchase more weapons and useful equipment from the black market.

The other type are top down vehicle missions in which you must destroy enemy vehicles such as helicopters controlled by Pit Bull’s goons.
